The Lower Place
I'm sharing a video once again by Elisabeth Elliot. Her thoughts on making ourselves small touched a tender place within my heart today.
I found my 'self' rising up recently in a manner which created a disturbance within and without.
Self wanted to be in the center. The Lord in His precious way helped me to find this tendency a deep sorrow.
I wondered in my heart if I will ever learn.
I appreciate Elisabeth sharing a time such as I've recently experienced.
She said that we learn by anything that cuts across our will or inconveniences us.
Another thought she shared twice for emphasis...."meekness is entirely detached from self assertion."
Yes.....as soon as I push forward and assert myself I have lost any touch of humility.
I'm weary of self. Yet, I find it's not weary of pushing it's way through my actions.
I'm thankful the Lord has many ways of humbling the flesh. I've been 'blessed' by some humbling moments recently.
I'm grateful.
Thank you Lord. You know my needs.
In the book 'Hinds Feet On High Places' a woman learns to follow Christ through trials and suffering. The companions who help her on her journey are named Suffering and Sorrow.
Her journey with these friends helps her understand the joy and blessing of taking the lower place, and the sorrow of self taking control.
In the book there is a song titled the Watersong....
I think often of the words "Let us go down lower still" when my heart longs to take the lead and charge ahead by my own strength.
I like the painting Daniel Gerhartz created of Hinds Feet's dear little Much Afraid...the name given to the woman whose companions are Suffering and Sorrow...
Much Afraid will one day have the new name of Grace and Glory, but first she must learn through sorrow and suffering how to follow the Shepherd.
It's a sweet analogy.
I leave you with one more thought from Elisabeth Elliot......
Meekness comes to a teachable heart. The meek He will guide in judgement.
May we have teachable hearts that are learning to take the lower place...a heart willing to be small.
